Hi guys, I recently picked up a ‘99 E36 328is earlier this year to serve as a fun summer car and I’ve enjoyed it for the most part until recently my ignition barrel gave out and I’ve had to resort to using a screwdriver to start & shut off my car. I figured a push-button start would be a nice modern touch so I ordered

from Jegs. The only caveat is that this kit only has 1 “ignition” switch and 1 momentary switch to pulse the starter. As our factory ignitions have Power, Accessory, Run, & Start, my question is this: “Can I wire all of these together to 1 toggle switch and 1 momentary switch?” If so, how?
Thanks!

I would have one large gauge power wire into the switch and your 3 other wires spliced into the output so they get power at the same time. A wi ring diagram would give you a better idea, you may only need one of the wires.

I essentially want the run/acc/start to be wired together. Do you think this is possible?

I suppose you could. Split the 12vdc hot wire going into your ignition switch , and run one to each switch.
Then figure out which one of the wires goes to the starter solenoid, run that to the momentary switch, and run all the rest to the toggle.
Wait..
I had it all figured out until I remembered there is a ground on the ignition switch. I have no idea what to do with that.
You will also loose the option to keep someone from stealing your car, and the use of your accessories setting on the ignition switch.

Well the car still won’t start without the key in the keyhole, so in that regard I still have some security.
However I’m not sure I follow the last bit about not having accessories on the ignition switch.

This approach takes the key out of the equation
.
“Can I wire all of these together to 1 toggle switch and 1 momentary switch?”
Is there something I’m missing here? You are not
wanting to bypass the ignition
sw
it
ch?

If you wire up the start up with the
run/acc, t
he starter would never stop running.

You can have run tied into the switch and then the starter to the button.(it depends on the vehicle but “ run” should have everything you need powered up )

So Power, Acc, Run all go to the switch and Start goes to the button

Thanks, I’ll give this a whirl this weekend with Power, Accessory, & Run all going to the switch, and Start going to the button

There’s a chip inside the key, and the sensor is inside the key hole. This is the EWS system
There’s a plastic bit in the barrel that’s rounded off over time and won’t turn the ignition switch, which is why I need a screwdriver (plus the key). I’m simply trying to remove the screwdriver bit from the equation so I don’t look like a hobo trying to Hotwire my own car

Don’t take my word for it, do your own reseach into solutions (since its an e36 there may already be a writeup) someone else may have b etter advice.
If it were me putting this together I’d get a wiring diagram(potentially ask OPPO because a few are techs a nd have access to them). If i had no diagram id strip all 3, and plug them into 12v seperately to see what happens. It may be that you only need to use the run wire.(Basically hot wiring your car and then installing a switch)

Yeah, that’s how you used to hot-wire a car.
You would cut and strip all the wires, and touch each one of the wires to the 12v wire until you found the one that
made the starter motor turn. Set that to the side, twist the rest of them together, and touch the starter wire to the bunch momentarily to start the car.
It takes a little longer than it does in the movies, but that’s how you did it.

Ah yes, the chipped key. I saw
“1999" and didn’t think about it.
You know what would else make you not look like a hobo trying to hot wire your own car?
Fixing it. :)

Did the colors in
my
wiring diagram match? I tried to find the diagram for you car before pulling out the crayons.

Believe it or not, yes! I was very impressed ! Note: wire colors used did not match the crayola wires.
